Shopify profit leaks

A profit leak is a cost that keeps running because nothing in your Shopify reporting puts it next to the revenue it consumes. These are the six that appear in almost every store.

1. Returns and refunds

The refund is the visible part. The invisible part is outbound shipping, return shipping, inspection time, repackaging and the units that cannot be resold at full price. Returns concentrate in a small set of products and reasons, which is exactly why they are fixable.

2. Discounts and promotions

Sitewide codes are applied evenly to products with wildly different margins. The result is a promotion that is profitable on paper and loss-making on half the catalogue. A discount ceiling per product solves most of it.

3. Shipping and fulfilment

Free-shipping thresholds set years ago, oversized parcels, remote-area and fuel surcharges. The gap between shipping revenue and the carrier invoice is often the second largest leak after returns.

4. Low-margin and loss-making products

Every catalogue has items that sell well and earn nothing. They look like winners in a sales report because sales reports do not subtract cost, returns and shipping weight.

5. Abandoned carts and lost checkouts

Traffic you already paid for, lost at the final step. Unlike the other leaks this one is lost revenue rather than added cost, but it is priced at your full acquisition cost.

6. Unprofitable customers

A segment that only buys on discount, returns heavily and never repeats can be net negative even at healthy revenue. You can only see it once profit is tracked per customer over time.

Frequently asked questions

Which leak is usually the biggest?+

In fashion and apparel it is almost always returns. In food, supplements and bulky home goods it is shipping. Category and country decide the order, which is why the scan asks for both.

How much can a store realistically recover?+

Not everything. Some leakage is the cost of doing business. Our estimates assume roughly 60% of identified leakage is actionable, which is deliberately conservative.

Is the free scan measuring my actual losses?+

No. It combines public storefront signals with benchmarks for your category, country and sales area to produce an estimate. Connecting your store replaces those estimates with your real numbers.
