Shopify product profitability
Bestseller lists rank by revenue. Profit rankings often look completely different — and the gap between the two lists is where a lot of Shopify margin disappears.
What true product profit includes
Per unit sold: selling price − discount allocated to that unit − COGS − payment fee − packaging − real shipping cost share − expected return cost (return rate × cost per return). What is left is contribution per unit.
The four product groups you will find
Once you rank products by contribution rather than revenue, they split into four groups.
- ◆Profit engines: high volume, healthy contribution — protect them, never discount them by default
- ◆Quiet earners: low volume, strong margin — deserve more merchandising and ad budget
- ◆Traffic magnets: high volume, near-zero contribution — cap discounts, bundle with earners, revisit price
- ◆Drains: negative contribution after returns and shipping — reprice, renegotiate, bundle or retire
Common causes of a drain product
Heavy or oversized items priced as if shipping were flat; sized apparel with a high return rate; products that only ever sell with a code attached; and supplier prices that rose while retail price did not.
What ProfitLeakGuard does with it
Connected stores get contribution per product with the cause attached and a concrete recommended action — reprice, bundle, renegotiate or retire — sorted by how much each decision is worth per month.
Estimates, not your numbers. Everything on this page is based on public ecommerce benchmarks and the signals a public storefront exposes. It is an indication of where profit typically leaks — not a measurement of your finances. Connect your store to replace estimates with your actual numbers.
Frequently asked questions
How do I allocate shipping cost to a product?+
Use the parcel's weight and dimensions share of the order, or the standalone shipping cost when the item ships alone. Flat-averaging across all orders hides exactly the bulky items you are looking for.
Should I delete loss-making products?+
Not automatically. Some lose money per unit but bring in customers who buy profitable items alongside. Judge them on basket contribution, then decide.
How many products are usually loss-making?+
It varies widely by catalogue, so we do not publish a universal figure. The point of the analysis is to find your number rather than assume one.
